Stamp duty receipts shot up in 22-23 to £15.4, up by more than 1bn from 21-22 which was £14.1bn.

Two thirds of the transactions were from residential property purchases at £11.7bn.

Despite the overall increase, individual payments actually fell from £11,202 in 21-22 to £9,937 in 22-23.

Much of this will be paid by landlords, and stamp duty is one tax which cannot be avoided by incorporating a buy-to-let business.
