"Dirty" Belfast tenants lose £800 of deposit
Belfast tenants who did not keep a rental home clean, and generally neglected the property, have lost £800 of their deposit as a result. The tenants were brandished "plain dirty" by the landlord who felt that they had been very disrespectful in the way they treated his property. "I provided a clean modern home for them, installed a brand-new boiler and only marginally increased the rent each year to cover some of the spiralling costs and this is how they pay me" he remarked. The cleaning company spent two days at a cost of £300 getting the property back into a clean state and the remainder was claimed for redecoration and damages. The £800 represented almost 80% of the deposit. The landlord could have claimed more and even taken the tenants to court for lost rent; however, we were engaged to mediate on the dispute to find a quick and fair resolution. This meant that both parties had the matter settled in days and money paid as opposed to having to wait up to two months for a decision from the deposit scheme adjudication.
