Another Labour housing scandal: Raynor now Reeves
Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves has set a very poor example to landlords by failing to obtain a mandatory landlord licence for a property that she rented out. The Chancellor has admitted the "error" but it comes not long after another Labour housing scandal where Angela Raynor underpaid £40,000 of stamp duty on the sale of an £800,000 flat. That was only admitted to after intense media scrutiny.
Landlords will be left wondering if breaching regulations and underpaying tax is OK for top government ministers, if it is OK for them. It's particularly bad for Reeves who is in charge of taxing landlords. It is expected that she will increase taxes or national insurance for landlords in the Autumn budget, even though she knows that this will increase rents for tenants. Or maybe sense will prevail.....
