HMRC to waive MTD landlord penalties in 2025-26

    Landlords don't often get good news, but HMRC have just announced that they will waive any late payment filling penalties for the new Making Tax Digital (MTD) for the first phase in 2025-26. If you don't know what MTD is by now you need to! MTD requires all landlords and the self-employed with an income of more than £50,000 to use specialist software (at their own cost) to make quarterly returns to HMRC, instead of submitting an annual one on their free government portal. The £50,000 limit is based on your previous tax year and it reduces in 2027 and 2028 to £30,000 and £20,000 respectively. The changes will put additional stress and costs onto landlords which will simply be passed onto tenants, and squeeze more landlords out of the sector, reducing rented homes and increasing the housing crisis. But then the government know this.....
