Landlords: pay HMRC by Saturday - help lines open Sat

Posted: 29/1/2026

Landlords - you have until this Saturday, 31st January 2026 to pay any tax owed. HMRC have caved into pressure and reversed their decision on helplines and will be manning a dedicated self-assessment helpline right up to and including the deadline on Saturday. They also say that they have "ramped up" their webchat. You can also get technical help here: HMRC online services help

Lines will be open on Saturday 9-4pm: 0300 200 3310 however don't leave it too late.

If you don't pay the amount owed on time, HMRC may charge an automatic penalty plus interest. If can't get your return filed, you can still make an estimated payment if you know your UTR. That may reduce or even eliminate any interest due, but you will still need to make a return.

The next tax year sees the graduated introduction of Making tax Digital meaning landlords will have to start making quarterly instead on annual returns. Just to give landlords more hassle and cost, HMRC are removing free online filing and insisting that you pay for accounts software. Don't forget to tell your tenants when you increase your rent, that it is the government and HMRC that are deliberately driving up costs which drive up rents.
