Landlords: Ready for Making Tax Digital on 6/4/26?
Landlords need to get organised for Making Tax Digital (MTD) which comes into effect on 6th April 2026 for landlords who earn £50kpa (total income) then April 2027 for £30k and £20k April 2028.
MTD will require landlords to submit quarterly returns, however it is a completely pointless exercise as tax will not be collected quarterly. It will be another piece of expensive and time consuming red tape despite the government stating that they would reduce red tape for businesses (btw, that is what is known as a lie - shock: poliiticians tell lies!).
Landlords will have to pay for HMRC approved software, or pay their accountant to make the submissions, and if you have a business partner or partners , they allhave to make quarterly returns. With a simple husband and wife landlord business, this will double the cost.
The result will simply be higher rents for tenants as landlords take account of the higher costs or landlords selling up, reducing the supply and thus increasing rent prices.
Time and time again successive governments have ignored industry advice and tenants ultimately end up paying the price.
One way to ease the new burden is to have your property professionally managed which helps to consolidate revenue and expenses calculations. Contact us for more details.
