Estate agents to have criminal checks - new law

Posted: 22/5/2017

Under new legislation coming out this summer, estate agents are to be required to have criminal checks conducted. Agents currently have to register with HMRC under anti-money laundering rules (AMLR), and this is an extension of those regulations. But curiously, no other group which comes under AMLR is being required to do so. That is despite the fact that estate agents don't really handle client funds, apart from deposits on new properties. Many other groups handle millions of pounds yet they are not required to have criminal checks carried out. Go figure! Pictured here is Gary Greedy estate agent.
